In Ireland written evidence of racing dates back to the third century
when chariot races were held at the "Cuireach" - the Gaelic word
for racecourse, on the lands known today as the Curragh Racecourse
and Training Grounds.
Voted 'Racecourse
Of The Year' 1999, the Curragh is the headquarters for Flat
Racing in Ireland, hosting all five classic Races including the
Budweiser Irish Derby and eighteen other quality racedays.
It is owned and managed by the Irish Turf Club, founded in Kildare
in 1790 to encourage the sport of Horse Racing.
The Racecourse
has been redeveloped in recent years and now boasts many world class
restaurants, bars, hospitality suites and viewing areas. The racetrack
lies on the historic Curragh Plains just 35 miles south of Dublin.
There are excellent motorway and rail connections.
The Curragh
training ground is a world class facility spreading over 1,500 acres
with numerous gallops of the highest standard ranging from all weather
to grass to sand. The gallops are maintained on a full time basis
in order to provide the best facilities to the trainers. The Kildare
facility realises the value attached to each thoroughbred that uses
its grounds therefore, provides a world class service.
